I Needed to Dig Deeper…..

I was determined to do things differently this time. I knew there had to be other factors besides the typical calories in/calories burned formula that I had been used to.

Let me say right now, the program that got me through my first year, is a GREAT program! The group that I was a part of at the time, was nothing short of a lifeline for me!!!!! Anything I say from here on, has no reflection on the program the group, the company, or the products. Thousands and thousands have had great success.

But I knew I needed to go further and delve deeper.

I wasn’t sure which direction to go? There certainly is no shortage of ‘diet’ options to choose from!

  • Keto
  • Paleo
  • Whole 30
  • Low fat
  • High protein, low carb
  • Vegan
  • Vegetarian
  • Raw
  • Etc., etc., etc….

Beyond weight loss, my real concern was health and wellness. I listen to podcasts every night to go to sleep, and I began to hear some health information that was new to me. The two main ones that resonated were the importance of gut health and the impact of inflammation……and how they both contribute significantly to metabolism, weight gain and autoimmune challenges.

I began to learn about the benefits of things like bone broth (REAL bone broth), fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, as well as probiotics, prebiotics, bitter herbs, turmeric, collagen, and Ayurvedic remedies and nutrition.

I began to incorporate these into my diet, not daily per se, but certainly to a very large degree. I found a fermented goat milk that I LOVE, and my favourite thing to have when I get home at night from an evening shift is a nice big mug of homemade bone broth or miso soup to which I add at least a tsp of powdered turmeric, Himalayan pink salt, and a big spoon of collagen……….and lots of pepper, of course!!!

So where to go from here?

What if there was a way to take the best of most of the nutrition philosophies above and combine them?

I had already begun to instinctively feel that I needed to switch things up nutritionally on a fairly routine basis. I felt like my metabolism needed a shake-up periodically and that might mean a few higher carb days every now and then, or some really lean days….

Then I came across a method that had already done the research and incorporated all the things I had been learning about gut health and inflammation etc. as well as mixing up the days and meals to keep the metabolism from stalling and becoming adapted and sluggish.

It was designed by a woman who had been through the diet/fitness world in a huge way. She was a celebrity in the fitness industry and famous for her exercise programs and infomercials.

After years and years and mega-success, she began to experience serious health issues from overworking and underfeeding her body in an effort to maintain the physical standards that seemed to be necessary to stay successful, to the point that she was exercising at least 3-4 hours every day and limiting her nutrition drastically. This began to take a serious toll and she underwent some diagnostic testing.

A brain scan revealed that she now had ADD and was well on her way to an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and that much of the damage she was experiencing was related to her diet. She walked away from the notoriety and ‘success’ to find true health and wellness. As she set out to heal her gut and reduce inflammation, she began to reverse the damage caused by the physical demands and nutritional restrictions.

These are the principles she shares with us in the 131 Method.

I have done my first twelve week round. Admittedly, I’ve basically just dabbled, trying to gauge how I truly felt about the program, how my body responded, and I have to say……I’m pretty darn impressed. The variety keeps my metabolism on it’s toes and the program is laid out so well and there is an abundance of incredible resources and education, including really simple, tasty, nutritious, whole food recipes!!

Here are just some of the key points about this method and the membership:

  • The initial program runs for 12 weeks.
  • These 12 weeks are divided into three four week sections: Ignite, Nourish, and Renew. You eat a specific way in each of the three different phases
  • There are no products you need to buy, no supplements, no shakes, no exercise programs.
  • There are lots of easy-to-prepare, whole food recipes provided that correspond with the different phases of the program.
  • Best of all, the 131 Method is a customizable approach that is meant to be tailored to your own personal and instinctive preferences, needs, and situation.

Our body actually thrives on change. You learn how to phase your nutrition over the 12-weeks. Having nutritional phases helps restore gut health, repair metabolism, reduce inflammation, correct appetite, and regulate hormones.

There are free meal plans to follow but they are not a requirement. They are simply there to help if you’d like to use them to get started.

My plan is to begin again, in earnest this time, January 2020, once the holidays are over.

I want 2020 to be my healthiest year yet…… If you’d like to join me, go to the link below.

This diet, that diet…..blah, blah, blah

How many have followed a program, experienced success and then, though you still continue to follow the program faithfully, suddenly the weight loss stops, or worse still…….you start gaining again?????

I had a year of significant success. I worked hard and established some seriously healthy habits and principles, losing over 50lb. I learned a lot about myself – even completing a 6-week fitness program (I hate exercise, remember?)

I thought I had finally established a pattern that would see me through the rest of my years.

I denied myself no good thing, ate most things in moderation, and never eliminated any food groups, including wine and dark chocolate!!!

I did eliminate most processed foods and sugar. I really increased my intake of veggies and I made a concentrated effort to drink more water. The water was a HUGE accomplishment for me, and a relative success – evidenced by my even more frequent bathroom trips. Oy…..

And then my weight loss stalled. I knew that was possible, and even to be expected for a period of time, but then it began to feel that no matter what I did, the only direction that the scale went was UP!

So what to do?

  • Eat less?
  • Exercise more?
  • All of the above?

Well, as I’ve stated in the past, exercise is not really my thing so, full disclosure, that wasn’t really a danger for me but I HAVE seen it in others. Still, I found myself starting to spiral in some old familiar ways.

My first instinct was to even further restrict my food intake. I’d have to stop eating this and stop eating that. I could feel myself falling into old patterns of thinking that were fuelled by panic and fear and would have ultimately lead me, once again, into an unsustainable, unhealthy, restrictive, train wreck of deprivation and defeat.

And then, when it felt like my good choices still made no difference, binging and purging.

  • I knew I couldn’t go back there.
  • I knew it was a trap.
  • I knew there had to be a better way.

Stay tuned….
